Une femme douce (A Gentle Woman)
A welcome release of Robert Bresson's drama adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story A Gentle Creature, to coincide with the film's 50th anniversary. Elle (Dominique Sanda) is an emotionally fragile and timid young woman, who becomes an unlikely object of affection for passionate and forthright Luc (Guy Frangin). They marry but it's an unequal marriage despite Luc's best efforts to integrate her into his world with regular visits to the theatre and cinema. Elle's sense of isolation intensifies and the couple's maid Anna (Jeanne Lobre) bears witness to the wife's deepening sadness, which leads to tragedy on the streets of Paris.
