Making Noise Quietly

Dominic Dromgoole directs a film adaptation of Robert Holman's stage play, which considers the devastating effects of war on strangers in a triptych of tenderly observed stories. In 1944 against the picturesque backdrop of the Kent weald, conscientious objector Oliver Bell (Luke Thompson) is drawn to openly gay artist Eric Faber (Matthew Tennyson) and the two men find slivers of tenderness and comfort as bombs rain down across Europe. In 1982 Redcar, proud mother May (Barbara Marten) is visited by Geoffrey (Geoffrey Streatfeild), a British army officer bearing the worst news about her son, who is serving in the Falklands War. In 1996 in the depths of the Black Forest in Germany, ageing holocaust survivor Helene (Deborah Findley) has a chance encounter with Alan (Trystan Gravelle) and she helps to build bridges between the angry father and his emotionally volatile young stepson.
