Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows

Born in 1947 in London, British artist Penny Slinger drew inspiration from 1960s counter-culture in the capital to embrace her generation's quest for sexual liberation through her ground-breaking collages and sculptures. She reinvigorated Surrealism from a feminist perspective and collaborated with playwright Jane Arden and filmmakers Peter Whitehead and Jack Bond. By the 1980s, Slinger had largely vanished from the public consciousness but more recently, her art has been rediscovered in key exhibitions and in 2017, she made the cover of The New York Times. Documentary filmmaker Richard Kovitch traces the rise of Slinger as part of the Kings Road art scene and her impact on contemporary artists, including contributions from Turner Prize nominees Jane and Louise Wilson and critic Michael Bracewell.
