An idealistic man of the law challenges the corrupt system in director Anubhav Sinha's Hindi-language thriller based on true events, which takes its title from a section of the Indian constitution, which prohibits discrimination based on religion, caste, sex or race. Ayan Ranjan (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a police office from a privileged upbringing, who has benefited from life in the city. He is posted to rural north India to investigate the disappearance of three teenage girls. Ayan is used to speaking his mind but he quickly realises that his brutal honesty is unwelcome in new surroundings where residents are still divided by caste. Fighting against 1000 years of discrimination, Ayan sets out to solve the case and challenge the out-dated views of his new neighbours.
