We the Animals
Based on the novel by Justin Torres, We The Animals is a tender coming-of-age drama intercut with animated sequences, which visualise the lead character's inner turmoil. Puerto Rican security guard Paps (Raul Castillo) lives with his Italian wife Ma (Sheila Vand) in Utica, New York and their three children, Manny (Isaiah Kristian), Joel (Josiah Gabriel) and youngest Jonah (Evan Rosado). It's a fiery marriage, punctuated by moments of domestic violence that forces Paps to temporarily leave home and Ma to take to her bed, battered and bruised. The boys are left to their own devices, running wild in the neighbourhood. While Manny and Joel take after their old man, Jonah is cocooned from harsh reality by his mother and Ma encourages him to seek refuge in an imagined world of his own creation.
