Sometimes Always Never

An estranged father and son rebuild bridges in first-time director Carl Hunter's offbeat comedy drama, which is penned by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Liverpudlian tailor Alan (Bill Nighy) has never recovered from an argument with his favoured son over the validity of the two-letter word Zo during a game of Scrabble. The golden child left home soon after and Alan has dedicated his life to mastering the board game in the hope that he might reunite with his boy. Alan's other son Peter (Sam Riley) feels second best but he is glad to offer his old man a place to stay in the home he shares with wife Sue (Alice Lowe) and shy teenage son Jack (Louis Healy). Curiously, Alan's unwanted presence kindles Jack's self-awakening and the lad musters the courage to declare his feelings to his crush at school. Meanwhile, during one game of Scrabble online, Alan encounters a player who pointedly uses the word Zo and the tailor becomes convinced that his missing son is attempting to reestablish contact.
