Kind Hearts and Coronets

Sir Alec Guinness delivers eight tour-de-force performances in Robert Hamer's delicious 1949 Ealing black comedy, which is regularly voted one of the best British films of all time. Set in the Edwardian era, the film revolves around the eccentric d'Ascoyne family - Aunt Agatha, cousins Ascoyne and Henry and Uncles Ethelred, Henry, Horatio and Rufus (all played by Guinness) - whose sizable fortune proves a temptation too great for Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price), the rightful heir to the estate. So Mazzini schemes to murder all eight members of the family who stand in his way of becoming the tenth Duke of Chalfont using different inventive methods. A subsequent menage a trois involving Mazzini's childhood sweetheart Sibella (Joan Greenwood) and socialite Edith D'Ascoyne (Valerie Hobson) has far-reaching and ironic consequences for Louis, who believes that he has escaped justice for his heinous crimes.
