Amazing Grace
In 1972, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, visited The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles with her producer Jerry Wexler, backing singers and a full complement of musicians to record an album of gospel music in front of a live audience. The congregation included her proud father Reverend CL Franklin, Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts, and gospel powerhouse Clara Ward. Oscar-winning filmmaker Sydney Pollack and a camera crew were present for two electrifying nights, capturing Franklin at the height of her powers as she recorded what would become one of her most popular LPs. More than 45 years later, after various technical hitches and legal wrangles, Pollack's concert film finally hits the big screen featuring stirring renditions of Precious Lord, Take My Hand, What A Friend We Have In Jesus and You've Got A Friend.
