The Cold Blue

In 1943, Academy Award-winning filmmaker William Wyler travelled to Europe to capture footage for his planned documentary The Memphis Belle: A Story Of A Flying Fortress. The director flew combat missions with B-17s and gathered startling images of bombing missions in Germany. Recently, director Erik Nelson discovered 34 reels of this raw, colour footage in the vaults of the National Archives. The Cold Blue painstakingly restores Wyler's work, frame by frame, accompanied by voiceover commentary from nine surviving B-17 pilot veterans, who experienced that harrowing summer of 1943. Their moving testimony is enriched with an original orchestral score composed by Richard Thompson and sound design by David Hughes. Screenings on July 4 also boast an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Cold Blue including an interview with William Wyler's daughter Catherine.
