Thirtysomething paramedic Rike (Susanne Wolff) hopes to unwind from her stressful job in Cologne by taking an extended vacation on her yacht, the Asa Gray. She plans to sail from Gibraltar to Ascension Island, a destination that proved fruitful for Charles Darwin. During the journey across the Atlantic Ocean, Rike faces a thunderous storm and when the elements calm, she is greeted with the sight of a fishing trawler overloaded with dozens of refugees. As maritime law dictates, Rike reports her find by radio to the coastguard, who assures the doctor that a rescue boat will be dispatched. Hours pass and no help arrives, putting Rike in an impossible position as she has to decide whether she should intervene and potentially save some of the refugees or allow the trawler to sink.
