Celebrated Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa explores tensions in his homeland, specifically combat between Ukrainian nationalists and the Donetsk People's Republic, in a series of 13 vignettes which blur the boundaries between conflict and reconciliation. Actors prepare to film scenes of brutality, which will be broadcast as real-life news footage captured from the frontline. A German journalist (Michael Walter) and his translator search for the truth but their efforts are thwarted by antagonistic soldiers, some of whom are new to the area. Meanwhile, hospital manager Boris (Boris Kamorzin) hoodwinks staff about the availability of drugs and devoted army man Simeon (Alexander Zamurayev) is commanded to give up his worldly belongings for his country.
