Children of the Snow Land
A group of schoolchildren embark on a perilous journey home in the debut feature of documentary filmmakers Zara Balfour and Marcus Stephenson. In the High Himalayas of Nepal, life is a battle against the elements but for young children, there is no chance of gaining the education they need to advance in life. Consequently, selfless parents send their little ones from the age of four to study under a Buddhist monk in the capital, Kathmandu. The children remain in the city until they graduate aged 16 and then return, sometimes after more than 10 years, to their homes high in the mountains. Balfour and Stephenson follows one group of children, brought up in a word of modern conveniences and social media, who return to the highest inhabited place on the planet just as a devastating earthquake strikes and threatens to destroy a community spirit that has not changed for centuries.
