In 2014, writer-director Dan Gilroy joined forces with actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo for the dark and twisted thriller Nightcrawler, which won numerous awards and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. The film-maker and his stars reunite for the nightmarish satirical thriller Velvet Buzzsaw set in the contemporary art world of Los Angeles. Acerbic critic Morf Vandewalt (Gyllenhaal) is searching for the next artistic sensation to prize open wallets of the city's wealthiest collectors. Morf's assistant Josephina (Zawe Ashton) answers his call by delivering a collection of deeply disturbing paintings, stolen from a dead hermit. The works beguile gallery owner Rhodora Haze (Russo), who made her name in a punk band during the 1970s. The subsequent media interest threatens to dethrone Piers (John Malkovich) as the world's most lucrative contemporary artist. Morf digs into the dark history of the paintings and discovers that if you stare into these troubling creations, the works of art come to life and demand freshly spilt blood.
