An Impossible Love (Un amour impossible)
Based on a novel by Christine Angot, An Impossible Love charts a tumultuous and troubled relationship between a man and woman over several decades. The film opens in 1960 and revels in the first flushes of amour between Rachel (Virginie Efira) and handsome Parisian translator Philippe (Niels Schneider), which results in pregnancy. She is left to raise their daughter Chantal on her own and Rachel devotes herself to her child. They build a stable, loving home and Chantal thrives in the absence of her father, despite the many obstacles that Rachel must overcome as a single parent. Yet Rachel's heart still yearns for the absent Philippe and, when he inevitably crashes back into her life, the mother risks further pain to stoke the smouldering embers of her desire.
