The Image Book (Le livre d'image)
Paris-born filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, one of the trailblazers of the French New Wave movement during the 1960s, explores our relationship with cinema and politics in this video essay, which was awarded a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The 87-year-old director distorts newsreels, classic film clips and other footage, sometimes beyond recognition, to interrogate the volatile relationship between the viewer and moving images. Accompanied by an immersive soundtrack, The Image Book interrogates cultural divides between east and west, and the role of art in bridging some of those differences.
