The Wild Pear Tree (Ahlat Agaci)
Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan continues to explore the sinewy threads that bind fathers and sons in a slow-burning drama co-written by his wife Ebru Ceylan and Akin Aksu. Sinan (Aydin Dogu Demirkol) studies at college in Canakkale, where he nurtures dreams of becoming a school teacher like his father and publishing a book of essays. The young man returns home to provincial Can where his father Idris (Murat Cemcir) has accrued considerable debts, bringing shame upon the family. The old man welcomes his boy with open arms and they work together on the land. In stark contrast, Sinan's mother Asuman (Bennu Yildirimlar) and sister Yasemin (Asena Keskinci) barely acknowledge his return since it would distract them from their favourite television shows. Fearful of the future that awaits him, Sinan rages against friends, relatives and neighbours but eventually he must look inside himself and address his insecurities.
