Disobedience

In 2018, Argentinian-born director Sebastian Lelio won the Academy Award for best foreign language film for the aptly titled drama A Fantastic Woman. He remains firmly rooted in matters of the female heart in Disobedience, which kindles forbidden romance in London's Orthodox Jewish community. New York-based photographer Ronit Krushka (Rachel Weisz) flies home to the UK at short notice to honour the death of her estranged father Rav (Anton Lesser). Childhood friend Dovid Kuperman (Alessandro Nivola) offers her a room during this period of mourning and he welcomes Ronit into his home shared with his dutiful wife, Esti (Rachel McAdams). The two women were secret lovers but Esti was persuaded by Rav to turn her back on her desires and marry Dovid. Living under the same roof, Ronit and Esti reignite their affair and risk the wrath of elders by flaunting their lust in public. Dovid is told he must keep his wife under control if he wishes to succeed Rav as spiritual leader of the local congregation but his faith is not strong enough to extinguish the flames of Esti's desire.
