Black Mother
Filmmaker and Kwalik Allah, who was one of the cinematographer's for Beyonce's Lemonade, directs this expressionist tribute to Jamaican history, culture, spirituality and philosophy. Loosely structured as the trimesters of a pregnancy, Black Mother incorporates myriad film stocks including 16mm black-and-white and moving testimonies from men and women across the generations. These heartfelt outpourings address Jamaica's tumultuous past and present from the abolition of African slavery in the mid-19th century to the present day impoverished communities, who sometimes have to sell their bodies.
