Shoplifters (Manbiki kazoku)
Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda won the coveted Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for this immaculately observed drama about a surrogate family living hand to mouth from their small-time crimes. Osamu Shibata (Franky Lily) lives in a cramped apartment with his wife Nobuyo (Sakura Ando), son Shota (Kairi Jyo), grandmother (Kilin Kiki) and a sex worker called Aki (Mayu Matsuoka). The family makes end meets by shoplifting from local stores and Osamu and his boy are experts at concealing products in their backpacks without detection. During one of their forays, father and son encounter a little girl called Juri (Sasaki Miyu), who appears to have been abandoned by her parents. The Shibatas take in Juri and raise her as their own, which has a profound effect on the dynamics inside the apartment.
