Anchor and Hope
A lesbian couple embarks on a turbulent journey to motherhood in Spanish writer-director Carlos Marques-Marcet's unorthodox romantic drama. Salsa teacher Eva (Oona Chaplin) lives on a canal boat with her girlfriend Kat (Natalie Tena) and their beloved pet cat. When the feline passes away, Eva develops strong yearnings to raise a family but Kat is less enthusiastic about adding another person to their cramped living arrangements. Good friend Roger (David Verdaguer) visits Eva and Kat on the boat and during a drunken late-night conversation, he floats the idea of being a sperm donor. Soon after, Eva and Roger act on this quickly conceived plan and Kat becomes an uncomfortable bystander to a growing bond between the expectant parents. Eva's mother Germaine (Geraldine Chaplin) attempts in vain to warn about the choppy emotional waters that lie ahead but her daughter is too wrapped up in planning for the baby's arrival.
