The Godfather

Another welcome re-release of Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 masterpiece based on the novel by Mario Puzo, which unravels the turbulent history of a Mafiosi clan as it battles for supremacy. Feted with three Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, who famously declined the award in protest of the treatment of Native Americans, the film opens at the lavish wedding of Connie Corleone (Talia Shire), daughter of the powerful Godfather Don Corleone (Brando). The entire family is in attendance including sons Sonny (James Caan), Fredo (John Cazale) and Michael (Al Pacino), the latter with new girlfriend Kay (Diane Keaton) on his arm. Divisions appear when the don refuses to enter into business with drug supplier Sollozzo (Al Lettieri). As tensions heighten, Don Corleone tries to keep a tight rein on his crumbling empire with the help of his lieutenant, Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall).
