Reinventing Marvin

Oscar nominee Isabelle Huppert (Elle) plays herself in director Anne Fontaine's character study of a young man coming to terms with his sexuality in the aftermath of a traumatic childhood. Marvin Bijou (Jules Porier) is raised in a country village by his parents, who struggle to connect with their boy, especially his brutish father Dany (Gregory Gadebois), who clearly suspects his son might be gay. Classmates bully and abuse Marvin and the youngster searches for a place where he feels he belongs. His salvation is headmistress Madeline Clement (Catherine Mouchet), who recognises that Marvin is a sensitive and gifted child. She suggests that he might want to express himself at drama school. As he grows up, Marvin (now played by Finnegan Oldfield) nurtures a love of acting but he continues to bear the scars of the past. He searches for love in the arms of an older man, Roland (Charles Berling), who doesn't fully comprehend Marvin's inner turmoil. The luminous Huppert becomes a beacon of light for Marvin as he begins to exorcise his demons on and off the stage.
