The Seagull
Michael Mayer directs a handsome period drama adapted from Chekhov's comedy in four acts, which deals with universal themes of unrequited love, jealousy and self-sacrifice. Esteemed writer Boris Trigorin (Corey Stoll), the loyal lover of domineering and selfish actress Irina Arkadina (Annette Bening), seduces young innocent Nina Zarechnaya (Saoirse Ronan) as a diversion. Once he has tired of the girl's company, Boris rejects her advances and sends her scurrying back to her beau, Irina's playwright son Konstantin (Billy Howle), who is praying for a reconciliation. Konstantin has invested all his love in Nina so if she rejects him, the consequences will be catastrophic. Irina's brother Sorin (Brian Dennehy) bears witness to the carnage as young hearts are shattered by the cruel intentions of an older generation.
