Recorded in 2018 on the stage of Wyndham's Theatre in London, Michael Grandage Company's revival of John Logan's Tony Award-winning drama welcomes back Alfred Molina to the role of American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. Red centres on a period in the late 1950s when Rothko is preparing to produce a series of murals for The Four Seasons restaurant on East 49th Street in Manhattan. The commission will be one the great challenges of the artist's career and he prepares under the gaze of his loyal assistant Ken, played by rising star Alfred Enoch. Before the canvasses dry, Ken challenges Rothko's theories on art and the painter begins to question whether a fancy restaurant in New York City is an appropriate space to view art.
