Leigh Whannell, who penned the script of the original Saw, writes and directs this dystopian futuristic thriller about a wronged man who is gifted a second chance at life by the appliance of cutting-edge science. Car mechanic Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) and his beautiful wife Asha (Melanie Vallejo) are attacked by four men on their way home from delivering a car to technology entrepreneur Eron Keen (Harrison Gilbertson). Asha is murdered and Grey's spine is severed. When he regains consciousness, Grey is a quadriplegic and the hunt for the killers goes cold despite the best efforts of Detective Cortez (Betty Gabriel). Plunged into despair, Grey cannot see any point to life until Keen offers him a trial of a new artificial intelligence micro-chip called STEM, which can be implanted into his spinal cord and take control of his broken body, allowing the mechanic to walk and function independently again. Grey agrees to the procedure and is stunned by the results. Back on his feet in record time, Grey vows to track down the killers and dole out rough justice with help from the STEM voice in his head.
