Cold War (Zimna wojna)
Award-winning director Pawel Pawlikowski charts a tender romance, shot in lustrous black and white, in his homeland in the aftermath of the Second World War. Pianist Wiktor Warski (Tomasz Kot) and his compatriot Irene Bielecka (Agata Kulesza) tour the snow-laden provinces of late 1940s Poland, auditioning young men and women to star in a state-sponsored show that will promote traditional song and dance. Zula (Joanna Kulig) is one of the fresh-faced hopefuls and her ambition clearly impresses Wiktor. They become secret lovers behind the back of government official Lech Kaczmarek (Borys Szyc), who intends to use the show as propaganda. As the affair intensifies, Wiktor suggests to Zula that they should defect to East Germany to escape the clutches of the Polish authorities. However, Zula relishes her status as one of the glittering stars of the show.
