The Nun (La religieuse)
A rerelease of Jacques Rivette's celebrated 1967 religious drama, based on the novel penned by Denios Diderot. Suzanne Simonin (Anna Karina) is pressured into taking vows of chastity, obedience and poverty by her mother, who is full of shame that Suzanne is not her husband's child. If this secret were to come to light, the family name would be besmirched and Suzanne would never be able to achieve her long cherished dream of marriage. Resigned to her grim fate, Suzanne accepts that she must become a nun and she enrols in a convent under the benevolent leadership of the Mother Superior, Madame de Moni (Micheline Presle). The older woman is sensitive to Suzanne's plight and helps the new arrival to settle in. When Madame de Moni dies and a new Mother Superior, Sister Sainte-Christine (Francine Berge), assumes control, Suzanne is isolated from the rest of the nuns for daring to challenge authority.
