Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda
Celebrated Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto came to the attention of global audiences as an actor, starring opposite David Bowie in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, for which he also wrote the haunting soundtrack. He won an Academy Award for his gorgeous score to The Last Emperor and continued to collaborate with director Bernardo Bertolucci on The Sheltering Sky and Little Buddha. More recently, he postponed treatment of his throat cancer to add a rich sonic dimension to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Oscar-winning opus, The Revenant. Stephen Nomura Schible's reverential documentary delves into Sakamoto's creative process in the words of the man himself, who divides his time between residences in Japan and New York. The film follows its enigmatic subject around the world over the course of five years, candidly reflecting on the cancer diagnosis and treatment alongside Sakamoto's passion for the natural world.
