The Opera House

On September 16, 1966, the 3900-seat Metropolitan Opera House officially opened as part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan, providing the city's resident opera company with a lavish new home under the auspices of Austrian-born general manager Rudolf Bing. The move from the company's original location on Broadway and 39th Street divided opinion, which was further inflamed when the opening production in Lincoln Square - Franco Zeffirelli's opulent staging of Antony And Cleopatra headlining baritone Justino Diaz and soprano Leontyne Price - fell foul of the critics. Susan Froemke's fascinating documentary combines archive footage and expert testimony to chart the turbulent relocation and the tug of war between the Lincoln Center's wealthy president John D. Rockefeller III and architect Wallace K. Harrison.
