Rajkumar Hirani directs Ranbir Kapoor in the title role of a dramatisation of the life of Indian film actor and producer Sanjay Dutt, whose performances in front of the cameras were almost as colourful as his real-life trials and tribulations. Born and raised in Bombay by actor parents Sunil (Paresh Rawal) and Nargis (Manisha Koirala), Sanjay is destined to follow them into the film industry, where he commands the adulation of die-hard fans. Celebrity comes at a price and he battles various addictions then in 1993, he is arrested in connection to a series of bombings in Bombay. Sanjay is eventually imprisoned for illegal possession of weapons, serving the final part of his sentence in Yerwada Central Jail. Hirani's picture charts Dutt's rise and fall, the emotional strength he draws from his wife Manyata (Dia Mirza) and his relationships with fellow Hindi actors including Salman Khan (Jim Sarbh) and Madhuri Dixit (Karishma Tanna).
