Animal World (Dongwu shijie)
Han Yan directs a visually arresting live action adaptation of the Japanese manga created by Nobuyuki Fukumoto. Zheng Kaisi (Li Yifeng) is struggling to pay the medical bills of his ageing mother, who has languished in a coma for years. He is besotted with one of the nurses, Qing (Zhou Dongu), but is too shy to pursue her, especially given the shambolic state of the family's finances. Instead, Kaisi retreats into a fantasy world where he adopts the powerful persona of a sword-wielding clown. Childhood pal Li Jun (Cao Bingkun), who is an estate agent, suggests one plan to action to pay off Kaisi's debts. Instead, Kaisi forges a Faustian pact with Anderson (Michael Douglas) to play an elaborate death match version of rock, paper, scissors against other desperate people. Losers are condemned to be exploited as human lab rats in scientific experiments.
