The Boy Downstairs
Falling in love with the box next door can be a perilous business in writer-director Sophie Brooks's low budget comedy drama. Aspiring writer Diana (Zosia Mamet) works in a bridal shop to pay the rent but she is desperate to find a new apartment and reinvigorate her stagnant life. Best friend Gabby (Diana Irvine) introduces Diana to waspish estate agent Meg (Sarah Ramos), who takes Diana to view a gorgeous second floor apartment in a building owned by bohemian widow Amy (Deirdre O'Connell). The older woman is very particular about the tenants she allows to live in her brownstone and she immediately warms to Diana. The millennial moves into the flat and as she heaves boxes into her room, she discovers that the downstairs resident is her old flame Ben (Matthew Shearer), for whom she still harbours feelings. In a cruel twist, he has a girlfriend - estate agent Meg - and she is less than thrilled about Diana's proximity to her man. As Diana wallows in memories of the past, she begins to stalk Ben in the hope they might rekindle their romance, which ended badly the first time.
