All the Wild Horses

The Mongol Derby is the world's longest and most physically gruelling horse race, set over 700 treacherous miles of the Mongolian steppe, recreating the route of Genghis Khan's postal system. Riders from around the world must use GPS to navigate a network of 27 horse stations, spaced about 40 kilometres (25 miles) apart, and change their mounts at each station. Selecting the wrong horse can be deadly if an animal bucks a rider, and competitors must spend each night with nomad families or in the wild, where they are at the mercy of ravenous dogs and the extreme weather conditions. Documentary filmmaker Ivo Marloh takes part in the race twice to secure unfettered access to a cross-section of riders from around the globe including South African horse whisperer Monde Kanyana, experienced Irish jockeys Donie Fahy and Richie Killoran, and 22-year-old American rider Devan Horn, who takes an early lead before she is worn down by the heat and exhaustion.
