That Summer
In 1975, Albert and David Mayles released the memorable documentary Grey Gardens, which introduced us to a mother and daughter both called Edie Beale, who were living in squalor in East Hampton, New York. This new documentary, largely comprised of 16mm footage from 1972 which had been presumed lost, paints an equally vivid portrait of the two women, known affectionately as Big Edie and Little Edie, during a summer when their cousin Lee Radziwill arrived with handymen in tow to update and clean the property to prevent Suffolk County from evicting the women. The film captures confrontations between the residents and visitors, and clashes of ego as Big and Little Edie vie for the spotlight.
