Based on the 1954 crime novel The Living And The Dead by Pierre Boileau and Pierre Ayraud, this restored print of arguably Alfred Hitchcock's finest hour unites James Stewart and Kim Novak at the apogee of their careers in a mesmerising tale which, with its dazzling camerawork, makes for suitably dizzying viewing. Stewart plays San Francisco police detective John "Scottie" Ferguson, who retires from active duty after his extreme fear of heights leads to the death of a fellow officer during a rooftop chase. Old college friend Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore) hires Scottie to follow his beautiful wife Madeleine (Novak), who Gavin sincerely believes is possessed by the spirit of her great-grandmother. Scottie accepts the assignment and he gravitates towards the emotionally fragile Madeleine, unaware that he is unwittingly stumbling into the middle of an elaborate murder plot that will nudge him to the brink of an emotional breakdown.
