Lean on Pete

Harrogate-born director Andrew Haigh, who won numerous awards for the homegrown dramas Weekend and 45 Years, heads to the sprawling vistas of the Pacific Midwest for this handsome adaptation of a novel by Willy Vlautin. Teenager Charley Thompson (Charlie Plummer) moves to Portland, Oregon with his father Ray (Travis Fimmel) and lands a job caring for a racehorse called Pete owned by Del (Steve Buscemi), a veteran trainer who will do whatever it takes to get his mount across the line with encouragement from jockey Bonnie (Chloe Sevigny). Following a family tragedy and distressing news that Pete is to be sent to the slaughterhouse, Charley steals the animal and embarks on a treacherous journey to Wyoming in search of redemption. En route, the teenager witnesses humanity at its most calculating and conniving, and he lashes out at people who mean him harm with shocking consequences. Craving love and acceptance, Charley continues his quest with his beloved steed by his side, blind to the cruel twist of fate that lies just over the horizon.
