This Is Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo is a mineral-rich nation, which has been scarred over the past two decades by bitter conflict and changes to the government. In a little over 90 minutes, documentary filmmaker Daniel McCabe attempts to make sense of the republic's blood-stained history and running battles between Rwandan and Ugandan-backed M23 rebels and the Congolese National Army. McCabe captures harrowing footage from the frontline and he interviews four contrasting figures at the centre of the upheaval. Among them are Colonel Mamadou Ndala, who has steadfastly repelled the M23 rebels from the North Kivu capital Goma, and a colonel in the National Army, sworn to protect President Joseph Kabila, who has frequently defected to fight with the rebels. The military man's identity is obscured and his testimony is read by an actor.
