The Rape of Recy Taylor

At this year's Golden Globe Awards, Oprah Winfrey gave a stirring speech about empowerment, equality and activism, which pointedly referenced Recy Taylor. Nancy Buirski's documentary shines a light on this forgotten hero of the black women's movement, who fought tirelessly alongside Rosa Parks. The film focuses on the sexual assault of 24-year-old Taylor - a mother and sharecropper - in 1944 Alabama at the hands of six white boys. Very few women dared to speak up about their ordeals but Taylor risked her life to identify her attackers and issue a rallying cry for justice, aided by Parks, who was working at that time as a rape investigator for the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP). Buirski's film draws parallels between Taylor's courageous stand and subsequent acts of indignation and defiance including the 1955 bus boycott and the 2017 women's global march.
