Solo: A Star Wars Story
The second standalone Star Wars anthology film, following the thrilling 2016 romp Rogue One, sketches the formative years of one of the sci-fi saga's most famous characters from a script penned by Jonathan Kasdan and his father Lawrence, co-writer of The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. Ron Howard replaced original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller during production and still delivered the finished film to the original release date, in good time for a special screening on May 15 out of competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Wise-cracking smuggler Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Wookiee sidekick Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) frequently operate on the wrong side of galactic law. Han's mentor Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and childhood friend Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) draw the lovable rogue into an action-packed adventure that leads to a charged meeting between Han and fellow smuggler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), who is shadowed by his droid companion L3-37 (voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Oscar winner John Williams provides the film's main musical theme but English composer John Powell assumes responsibility for the bulk of the picture's stirring soundtrack.
