A Cambodian Spring

Shot over the course of six tumultuous years, director Chris Kelly's documentary explores the efforts of three people to challenge the authority of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and speak out in favour of land rights protests, which lit the touch paper on tensions that defined the 2013 general election. The film focuses on Buddhist monk and award-winning activist Venerable Loun Sovath, who is ostracised by his own religious leaders when he chooses to lend his voice to the cause. Two mothers, Srey Pov and Tep Vanny, energise the movement with their children in tow, risking violence, intimidation and imprisonment for their rebellion. Kelly's snapshot of three lives in crisis venerates the endurance of the human spirit and the importance of bravely fighting for what you believe in to the bitter end.
