The Young Karl Marx (Le jeune Karl Marx)
Director Raoul Peck dramatises the early years of the German philosopher, concentrating on a vibrant period when Marx (August Diehl) forged strong friendships that would galvanise his thinking. In 1843, Marx ruffles feathers with articles in the Rhineland News but he struggles to provide for his wife Jenny (Vicky Krieps) and their daughter. Eventually, they relocate to Paris where Marx pledges his time to wealthy patron Arnold Ruge (Hans-Uwe Bauer). In the French capital, Marx encounters factory owner's son Friedrich Engels Jr (Stefan Konarske) and the two men are inspired by each other's work. They share drinks on the streets during battles between agitators and French police loyal to the monarchy.
