New Town Utopia
Funded in part through a campaign on a crowdfunding website, director Christopher Ian Smith's documentary shines a light on the new town of Basildon, Essex and the various artists, musicians and poets, who collectively take responsibility for firing the area's creative soul. Built in the aftermath of the Second World War as part of a government initiative to create towns that inspired civic pride, Basildon is now 60 years young but it bears little resemblance to the flourishing hub of beauty and culture that the designers promised. With the aid of angry on-screen puppets and the participation of Oscar winner Jim Broadbent as the voice of Lewis Silkin MP, the film pays tribute to the individuals, who still believe they have the power to inspire and enrich their community.
