The Deer Hunter
In 1979, The Deer Hunter was nominated for nine Academy Awards, eventually winning five statuettes including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor In A Supporting Role. This 40th anniversary re-release still delivers a shock to the system with its infamous Russian roulette sequences. Russian-American steelworkers Nick Chevotarevich (Christopher Walken), Steven Pushkov (John Savage) and Mike Vronsky (Robert De Niro) live in the small town of Clairton in Pennsylvania. Before the trio heads off to war in Vietnam, Steven marries his girlfriend Angela (Rutanya Alda), who is pregnant by another man. At the wedding, Nick asks his girlfriend Linda (Meryl Streep) to marry him, unaware that Mike is secretly in love with her too. Mike, Nick and Steven do their duty for their country but they are emotionally and physically scarred by their ordeals. They return home and struggle to piece together their fractured lives, haunted by the ghosts from behind enemy lines.
