Todd Haynes, award-winning director of Carol and Far From Heaven, helms a beautifully crafted drama split in two timelines, adapted for the screen by Brian Selznick from his own 2011 novel of the same title. In 1927, a deaf girl called Rose (Millicent Simmonds) sneaks out of her house, without the knowledge of her father (James Urbaniak), in order to track down her mother: screen diva Lillian Mayhew (Julianne Moore). This odyssey leads to the halls of The American Museum Of Natural History in Manhattan, where she makes a startling discovery. In 1977, a little boy called Ben (Oakes Fegley), laments the recent death of his mother Elaine (Michelle Williams) in a traffic accident. He also runs away from home, this time to track down his biological father. The tyke's journey eventually takes him to The American Museum Of Natural History, where he forges a tender friendship with an inquisitive boy named Jamie (Jaden Michael) and learns sobering truths about his family history.
