Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms
Mari Okada writes and directs an animated fantasy about a close-knit tribe, which possesses the secret to immortality. Maquia (voiced by Manaka Iwami) is a member of the Iolph, a peace-loving people blessed with youthful longevity, who care deeply for one another. The most beautiful girl in the tribe is Leilia (Ai Kayano). Her radiant looks will not diminish once she reaches her mid-teens. The tranquillity is shattered when an army invades with the intention of learning the truth about the clan's ability to escape the ravages of time. The interlopers kidnap Leilia and Maquia's sweetheart vanishes. Lost and alone, Maquia stumbles into a dark forest and discovers an orphaned baby boy called Ariel (Miyu Irino). Maquia takes pity on the stricken child and forges a bond with the mortal infant. As time passes, Ariel grows up and ages but Maquia does not, testing the bonds of their relationship.
