The Islands and the Whales
Situated in the North Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Norway, the Faroe Islands are home to self-sufficient communities, which welcome avid bird watchers throughout the year. For generations, the islanders have lived off the land and sea, predominantly hunting whales and seabirds. Mike Day's revealing documentary travels to the islands as locals face an agonising dilemma. Increasingly polluted oceans have contaminated sea life, turning their beloved food sources into toxic time bombs. In order to survive, the islanders must abandon centuries of tradition handed down from parents to children but it is not easy to sever ties to the past.
