Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist
Born in the Derbyshire village of Tintwistle, Dame Vivienne Westwood DBE has been a trailblazing figure in British fashion for more than four decades, skilfully emboldening the proud defiance of the punk movement as manager of the Sex Pistols, who also wore her eye-catching designs. Director Lorna Tucker's documentary pays affectionate tribute to the doyenne of counterculture by interviewing Westwood, who isn't the most willing subject on camera. These entertaining and often revealing exchanges are intercut with archive footage and photographs, charting her rollercoaster personal history, including her relationship with Malcolm McLaren. The film also explores the pressures of being a successful businesswoman and Westwood's political concerns, which have frequently put her at odds with the polite mainstream.
