Proud Mary
An expert assassin discovers that her heart of ice can be melted in director Babak Najafi's action thriller. Mary Goodwin (Taraji P Henson) is a hit woman for hire for a Boston crime family headed by Benny (Danny Glover). She accepts each job without hesitation until the murder of a nameless gambler orphans a boy called Danny (Jahi Di'Allo Winston). Mary is consumed with guilt for wrecking the lad's future and she observes him from afar, vowing to keep him safe in a world that abuses the weak and innocent. She takes Danny under her wing and pays a visit to his boss, a vicious drug dealer called Uncle (Xander Berkeley), which predictably ends with one dead body. Unfortunately, the kill ignites a bitter turf war between the Russian mafia led by Luka (Rade Serbedzija) and Benny's brotherhood. Fearful of the repercussions for Danny, Mary vows to keep secret her pivotal role in Uncle's demise but Benny's hot-headed son Tom (Billy Brown) won't rest until Uncle's killer is brought to justice. As allegiances are tested to breaking point, Mary realises she may have to turn against the surrogate criminals that have been her family for years to provide a brighter future for Danny, even if she cannot be a part of it.
