Writer-director Justin Chon's second feature is a low-budget drama, shot in black and white, which relives the 1992 Los Angeles race riots through the eyes of two Korean brothers. Eli (Chon) and Daniel (David So) reluctantly take charge of their late father's shoe shop, which is situated close to the South Central neighbourhood of the city. African-American, Asian and Latino gangs vie for control of surrounding streets and the brothers try to keep their heads down, forging a touching friendship with an 11-year-old black girl called Kamilla (Simone Baker), who helps around the shop when she should be at school. When the city goes up in flames in response to the Rodney King trial verdict, the brothers witness racial divisions in uncomfortable close proximity.
