The Third Murder (Sandome no satsujin)
Award-winning Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son) skilfully navigates the murky depths of the human condition in a tense courtroom drama that smudges the line between truth and invention. Brilliant lawyer Tomoaki Shigemori (Masaharu Fukuyama) agrees to represent murder-robbery suspect Misumi (Koji Yakusho), who served time 30 years ago for another killing. It seems like an open and shut case: Misumi admits his guilt and there is a strong possibility that the resulting sentence will be the death penalty. Despite these overwhelming odds, Shigemori applies due diligence to the case and investigates the mountain of evidence. He sits through detailed testimony from his client and the victim's family, and the conflicting versions of events sow the seeds of doubt. Shigemori begins to suspect that Misumi isn't guilty after all and the real murderer might still be at large.
